Smartphones: LG G4 Or Huawei P8, Which One To Choose?

In the family of very high-end smartphones, there are the iconic ones, the iPhone 6 and Galaxy S6, which occupy the upper hand. And then there are the others, those who would like to find a place in the sun. Like the LG G4 and Huawei P8. And for good reason. These two devices have nothing to envy their haloed comrades and have the advantage of being much more affordable. So why not let yourself be tempted?

Design and finish

Here are two smartphones with a very successful design. The LG G4 takes up the luxurious codes of leather goods with a leather back of the most beautiful effect. Its slightly domed design gives the impression of having a flex screen, like the G-Flex. It’s all in the feeling. As for the Huawei P8, it is part of the great all-metal trend initiated by HTC and since taken over by Apple and Samsung. On one side, a 5.5 inches, on the other a 5.2 inches. Except that in fact, the screen is almost identical. There is a very small difference which in terms of overall format becomes enormous: 4 centimeters more for the LG (148.9 against 144.9 mm). The same goes for the thickness: 9.8 mm in the thickest part of the G4 6.4 mm for the Huawei. And inevitably in terms of weight it is felt: 11 grams of difference on the scale with an advantage for the telephone of the Chinese group. So a big plus for Huawei in the design category, especially since we can cast serious doubts on the lifespan of the LG’s leather back. You will have to be careful not to put it on a greasy bistro table, or not to pick up your phone after eating crisps!

Screen

5.5 inches versus 5.2 inches, as has been said. Full HD (1.90 × 1,080 pixels) at 424 pixels per inch (ppi) for the P8 versus Quad HD (2560 × 1440) and 538 ppi. On paper there is no photo. And in fact neither. The LG screen is vivid, with greater depth. The power of Quad HD makes all the difference. So inevitably the P8 is a little pale next to it. Even if in fact he is doing more than well.

Power

On the one hand a 1.8 GHz hexa-core Snapdragon 808, on the other a Kirin 930, 2 GHz octo-core, both supported by 3 GB of RAM for good overall performance. It runs very well and without a hitch. In the small game of the AnTuTu benchmark, the Huawei is doing very well with a total of 47,083 against 46,625 for the LG.

Camera

It has become one of the criteria of choice and an element of differentiation compared to the competition. LG has made it a point of honor lately to offer high quality photophones. And with the G4, it’s quite successful. First of all with a 16 million pixel sensor with an aperture of F / 1.8. The big plus for Korean is undoubtedly the laser autofocus coupled with the image stabilizer. It is very clean, whatever the conditions. Also note the manual mode for purists which will take control of the shutter speed, the focus, the white balance … At Huawei, the sensor is 13 million pixels and the aperture is F / 2.0. Again nothing to say, even if the pictures are better made in Korean. The Chinese group has added a whole bunch of additional features (Lightpainting, timelapse, video director mode) that will appeal to fans of effect photos.

Operating system

On both sides, Android 5.0 Lollipop is part of the game with a little house overlay on both sides. Nothing revolutionary. Note all the same Huawei’s Knuckle function which allows you to take a screenshot by tapping twice on the screen.

Drums

For autonomy, the LG advantage on paper with its 3,000 mAh battery against 2,680 mAh for the Huawei. But there is no miracle, daily loading will be required, under penalty of unpleasant surprises.

Price

Huawei offers its P8 at an extremely attractive price of 499 euros given the finish and technical specifications of the device. LG displays a more upscale price (from 649 to 699 euros for the leather versions), but the device has 32 GB of memory against 16 for the Chinese. Note, both devices have a MicroSD port for a significant memory expansion. As for the best value for money, you will understand, it will be necessary to turn to the Huawei.
